“Trash,” also known as “Garbage,” is a fun and easy-to-learn card game that is suitable for players of all ages. The objective of the game is to be the first player to get rid of all your cards by arranging them in a specific order. Players take turns drawing cards from a draw pile or from the discard pile, trying to complete their designated layout of cards.

  1. Players : 2 or more (ideal for 2-6 players).
  2. Deck : A standard 52-card deck is used. If there are many players, you might need additional decks.
  3. Layout : Each player sets up a layout of 10 cards, face down. The layout is typically arranged in two rows of five cards.

1. Initial Setup

  • Each player receives a layout of 10 face-down cards.
  • Each player will also need to keep the first cards in their layout hidden until they reveal them.
  • The remaining deck is placed face down in the center as the draw pile, and an additional card is turned face up to create the discard pile.

2. Card Ranks

  • Cards rank from 1 to 10, where Ace is 1, and the numerical cards (2-10) follow their face value. Face cards (Jack, Queen, King) have no value in this game and cannot be played.
  • You can decided to set Jack (or others) as “Joker” cards.

3. The Turn

  • On each player's turn, they draw a card:
    • If they draw a numbered card (1-10), they can place it in the corresponding position in their layout (e.g., a 1 in position 1, a 2 in position 2, etc.).
    • If they do not have a card to place (or draw a face card), the card is discarded face-up onto the discard pile, and the turn passes to the next player.
    • If they draw a Joker (if using a deck with Jokers), they can set it aside and draw another card.

4. Returning to the Layout

  • After each turn, players can also choose to pick up from the discard pile, instead of drawing a new card from the draw pile, which allows them to potentially complete their layout quicker.

5. Completing the Layout

  • Players continue taking turns drawing cards and placing them into their layout. Once a player has filled all 10 positions with the correct numbered cards, they yell “Trash!” to end the game.

6. Winning the Game

  • The first player to correctly fill all positions in their layout wins the game. The game can be played in rounds, where the winner is the one who wins the most rounds.
  • Players can keep their layout secret until they place the cards, making it strategic.
  • You can add variations, such as using special cards or changing the number of cards in the layout, depending on your group's preference.
